Human rights activists and key stakeholders in the consumer protection industry will on Thursday devise policies to reverse the challenges facing consumers in Nigeria.
The event is the 2016 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch “Human Rights Summit” scheduled to hold at the High Court of Lagos State Foyer to mark this year’s World Human Rights Day.
The theme of the 2016 Human Rights Day is, ‘Stand up for Someone’s Rights Today’. The maiden NBA Lagos Branch Human Rights Summit lecture would be delivered by renowned legal scholar and respected jurist, Prof. Akin Oyebode.
While fiery human rights campaigner and keynote speaker, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, will tackle the topic, ‘Consumer Rights in Nigeria: Matters Arising’, another human rights activist and discussant, Mr. Jiti Ogunye, has confirmed his readiness to punch holes in Adegboruwa’s paper. Leading lawyer, Dr. Obinna Dike, is among the practitioners to dissect the keynote speech.
The regulatory agencies would be led to the parley by lawyer and Director-General of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Mrs. Dupe Atoki, who will chair the forum.
Other regulatory agencies that would attend the forum are the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Directorate of Consumer Protection and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) among others.
Apart from the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the operators would be led by Etisalat Communications Limited and Cadbury Nigeria Plc.
Anchored by the Human Rights Committee of the branch, the event would be hosted by the branch chairman, Mr. Martin Ogunleye.
In a statement to mark this year’s Human Rights Day, the United Nations said, “This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone’s rights! Many of us are fearful about the way the world is heading.
“Disrespect for basic human rights continues to be widespread in all parts of the globe. Extremist movements subject people to horrific violence. Messages of intolerance and hatred prey on our fears. Humane values are under attack,” he noted.
